Montepaschi's Pianigiani named Italian national coach

Montepaschi Siena head coach Simone Pianigiani will be introduced on Tuesday in Rome as the Italian national team coach by the Italian Basketball Federation. He takes over for Carlo Recalcati, who resigned. Pianigiani, 40, is currently in his fourth season as Montepaschi head coach and he has led the club to unprecedented success. He has guided Montepaschi to three Italian League championships, one Italian Cup and an appearance in the Euroleague Final Four. Before taking the reins in 2006, Pianigiani spent a decade with Montepaschi as a junior and assistant coach. His first job for Italy will be trying to secure a berth at EuroBasket 2011 via qualifying this summer.
